DETROIT (WWJ) -- Firefighters and investigators are on the scene of a deadly house fire on Tuesday on Detroit's northwest side.

Neighbors said the fire started around 9:30 a.m. at a home on San Juan Street, near Eight Mile Rd. and Livernois.

A family of six was inside, and neighbors went into the burning home to help get them out.

"The rescue quite dramatic," WWJ Newsradio 950's Jon Hewett reported, "as neighbors helped take one baby out a window from a mother, and also kicked in a door."

Unfortunately, the fire department confirms that one victim — a middle-aged woman, identified as the grandmother of the children in the home — died in the fire.

One of the Good Samaritans who helped in the rescue was Timothy Davis, who lives nearby.

"When I kicked in the door, it was full of smoke — thick, black smoke," Davis said. "So, I wouldn't recommend it, but I did it."

"The mom actually told me that the son was laying on the floor in the kitchen. So, at first I couldn't see him, so I actually had to crouch down on my knees to actually see him."

Officials said that child was initially unresponsive, but paramedics were able to get him breathing. He was rushed, along with several other people, to a local hospital.

The conditions of those hospitalized was not immediately known, although officials said there was only one fatality, and that five people did make it out of the house alive.

It's unclear how the fire started. Arson investigators have been called to the scene.
