WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - A 74-year-old woman from the Lansing are was left with a sprained ankle after a wrestler and a spectator got into an altercation at an event in Southgate on Saturday.
According to The News-Herald, Sgt. Jason Kment said the fan-spectator and the wrester began shoving each other at a Metro Pro Wrestling event at Arkay Service Center at 15221 Eureka Road in Southgate.
The shoving match escalated until the spectator fell back and knocked an elderly woman down where she became pinned under a chair.
Authorities said both the wrestler and the spectator blamed one another for starting the altercation, but neither pressed charges when police arrived on scene.
Metro Pro Wrestling released a statement on its Facebook page which said the incident began when the spectator — that the poster said was drunk — yanked the wrestler's pants down in front of the audience.
"As all of you must know how degrading this must have been to the wrestler," the post said. "Another wrestler took offense to this, as well as the man’s daughter kicking a manager, and pushed the male fan in retaliation."
Police made no arrests and no tickets were given out.
According to the poster, a follow up was done on the elderly woman who suffered a swollen knee as a result of being knocked down, but is expected to recover.
“All those involved in the melee will no longer be at MPW,” the statement said. “I love our fans and I’m truly sorry and embarrassed by the incident and I will no longer discuss it after this post. I will do everything in my power to keep MPW a safe, friendly environment for all the fans and wrestlers.”
Metro Pro Wrestling has had several events at the Arkay Service Center in the past and most of its wrestlers are from out of state; the woman is a native of Parma near Lansing.
