WOMC's parody song 'We Will Beat You' adds hype to football frenzy as Detroit Lions prepare to host Tampa Bay Buccaneers — listen here
(WWJ) - If you need a little extra something to get you pumped up for Sunday's showdown between the Detroit Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, WOMC has you covered.
A sea of Honolulu blue has created a visual feast for football fans around Metro Detroit with billboards taunting the Bucs popping up on local freeways while General Motors showed their support by adding a lion's tail to their logo on top of the Renaissance Center on the Detroit waterfront.
The Lions fervor has even swept across the border into neighboring Windsor, Canada were city officials hoisted a Lions flag at city hall on Thursday in support of the team.
And now, WOMC's morning show released a parody song in support of the Lions and to get fans ready for the big day.
"We wanted to be able to show our support for the Lions, for the amazing season that they're having and just the energy of the city is infectious," said WOMC's Jason Raithel from the Jo Anne And Jason show. "We wanted to add to it and I just think that the song is awesome and it encompasses this Lions team."
The song, produced by Raithel and written by co-host JoAnne Purtan, was set specifically to the tune of Queen's "We Will Rock You" for a very special reason.
"When the Lions were in the playoffs in 1991, that was a song that they used as a [hype] song, so it was like a throwback," Raithel explained.
And the response from fans has been ecstatic. When the morning show debuted the parody song, "We Will Beat You" this week, Raithel said comments came flooding in on social media as well as on his phone.
"A few of my friends texted me during the show. My one friend, Natalie, was saying that her son was laughing. He loved the song. Even my mom texted me, she goes, 'the song was hilarious. I loved it.'"
Raithel doesn't have a one particular lyric he likes, but rather loves the entire piece for its catchiness and feel-good vibes.
"The thing that I like about the song the most is that it like is an earworm, So you are singing it all day," he added.
