MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) -- After allegedly driving drunk, travelling the wrong way on I-696 and causing a fatal crash, a Jackson man faces multiple felony charges -- including second-degree murder -- and could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Stephano Nabors, 40, stands accused of second-degree murder, operating while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and fleeing and eluding in connection with a reckless driving incident that killed another driver.
Second-degree murder carries a life sentence, and the other three charges are 15-year felonies.
At Monday's arraignment, bond was set at $1 million, and a probable cause hearing is scheduled for May 24.
Officials say Nabors was driving east in the westbound lanes of I-696 in the early hours of Friday, May 5. The defendant struck one vehicle near Couzens Rd, causing a rollover.
Michigan State Police troopers were entering I-696 near Groesbeck when Nabors nearly hit their patrol car. They followed the wrong-way motorist, which then crashed head-on into a second vehicle.
This second collision killed the other driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido thanked MSP troopers for risking their lives to stop Nabors, calling the crash a "tragic and senseless loss of life."
