The wildfires in the Los Angeles area are devastating large swaths of land, burning out of control and destroying homes officials are still trying to evacuate. Now those same fires could affect Monday's Vikings-Rams NFL Wild Card game.
According to several reports from NFL insiders, the league is actively monitoring the situation in L.A. as those fires continue to spread and the air quality worsens.
Currently, it's doubtful Monday's game between Minnesota and Los Angeles would be postponed, but at least one report suggests the league would consider moving the game, perhaps to nearby Phoenix or Las Vegas.
As of now nothing has changed and the game is still scheduled to be played at SoFi Stadium in L.A. suburb of Inglewood. That area is not currently under threat of the fires, which are primarily burning around 10 miles away, north and west of Inglewood.
The teams themselves have no say in whether or not the game takes place Monday, or if it's moved. That decision will solely be made by the league.
High winds, the Santa Ana winds, and abnormally dry conditions have caused these massive fires that are now burning out of control.
WCCO Chief Meteorologist Chris Shaffer says there is good news for the area, with decreasing winds and increasing humidity coming by the end of this week.
"The wind will be strongest now in the California area, it will be winding down later on tonight, but it'll take a few days to battle things," Shaffer explains. "So far it sounds like the game would carry on."
