Many Americans are skipping summer vacation this year because they can't afford it.
According to a study done by Bankrate.com, 39 million Americans won't be going on a summer trip and a large portion are citing day-to-day bills as the primary obstacle.
Financial advisor Kenneth Bertucci with Bertucci and Labiche Wealth Management, says it's unfortunate that we see that happening.
"But I also think that it's probably not a bad idea to not get ahead of yourself," said Bertucci.
Bertucci says sometimes when you talk about a vacation that involves a lot of travel while that may be a major part of the expense...
"Once you get to that destination you can also run up a lot of other bills, like meal costs or things that you want to do," said Bertucci. "There's the famous line, 'well while I'm here I've gotta do it,' and then you get yourself in some trouble as well, so make sure you plan ahead."
Early planning will help with lower airfare and hotel accommodations. And budget yourself so you can pay that credit card at the end of the month to avoid interest.
He suggests if money is a problem, a staycation in your hometown may be the way to save some dollars.
