A man accused of killing a New Orleans Police officer has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Darren Bridges is charged with the murder of Officer Marcus McNeil in New Orleans East in October 2017. Bridges' defense says he suffers from auditory hallucinations and isn't capable of assisting his lawyers during the trial.

Mental incompetence to stand trial is not the same as an insanity plea. The judge ordered Bridges to a psychiatric institution for treatment in order to make it possible for him to be tried at a later date.
