With Mardi Gras over, observant Christians are making sacrifice for Lent. New Orleans Catholic Archbishop Gregory Aymond says too many people seem to confuse this with making New Year's Resolutions.
"I just something read this morning that it's time to diet, and a time to refrain from things, and one of the things I read this morning didn't even mention God," said Aymond.
"Really Lent is about God," he said. "It's God's way of calling us to look honestly at ourselves, to look in the mirror of life, and see ourselves with our goodness, but also with our weakness and sin."
But the archbishop says that doesn't mean one must punish oneself.
"It's to cleans ourselves, to be able to become more disciplined in our spiritual life," said Aymond. "At the end of Lent, we're not supposed to say, 'Gee, I was able to give that up and I did it for 40 days!'"
