Forecasters are keeping their eyes on an area over Georgia and Alabama that could develop into a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico.

"A trough of low pressure located over the southeastern United States is forecast to move southward toward the northeastern Gulf," Hurricane Specialist David Zelinsky said in a National Hurricane Center Tropical Weather Outlook.

He says conditions are looking favorable for development in the Gulf.

"A broad area of low pressure will likely form in a few days. Some gradual development is possible thereafter and a tropical depression could form by the end of the week."

Zelinsky says the system is not expected to get far from land and should meander near the northern Gulf Coast.

"Regardless of development, this system has the potential to produce heavy rainfall along portions of the central and eastern U.S. Gulf Coast later this week."

Coastal residents are urged to pay attention to the low pressure system.

"Interests along the northern Gulf Coast and Florida peninsula should monitor the progress of this system."

The National Hurricane Center gives the system a 60 percent of some development over the next five days.  The chance is zero percent over the next two days.
