New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell released a statement following Governor John Bel Edwards’ announcement to extend the stay-at-home order until May 15.

At a media conference on Monday, Governor Edwards said Louisiana did not meet the Trump Administration’s criteria to move the state into ‘phase 1’ of re-opening the economy.

“As Governor Edwards made clear today, it is absolutely critical for the safety of our people that residents continue to STAY HOME at this time, and not move prematurely to resume public activity,” said Cantrell. “The Stay Home Mandate I issued for the people of Orleans Parish remains in effect through May 15, and the governor has now extended the statewide order through that same date. We need everyone to double-down. People must continue to stay home except for essential activities, and people must wear face coverings in public. Stay home now, so we can all come together safely when the time is right.”

So far, there have been 406 coronavirus deaths in Orleans parish and 1,697 deaths across Louisiana.
