The president of De La Salle High School is taking a medical leave of absence after attempting to leap from the Huey P. Long bridge, according to a report from The New Orleans Advocate.

Causeway Police and Jefferson Parish Sheriff's officials responded to the incident around 5:00 p.m. Monday. After about three hours of negotiating, the potential jumper, later identified as Michael Giambelluca, turned himself over to emergency responders and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The school said in a statement today that Giambelluca is on medical leave, and they are "saddened by the reported incident."
