A man is facing charges after police say he tried to rape a woman at Audubon Park in New Orleans.

"The NOPD arrested Ate’ Dumas (B/M, DOB 6/13/1988) in connection with two incidents that occurred in the Second District," the NOPD Public Information Office said in a news release.

The attack happened about 7:00am on June 8, 2019.

"District officers and NOPD Special Victims Section Sex Crimes Unit detectives were notified of an attempted sexual assault that reportedly occurred at Audubon Park that morning."

Detectives learned that a female victim was attempting to exit a restroom at the park when a man tried to rape her.

"The victim reportedly escaped the subject and fled the area."

Cops also got a call of an aggravate assault at the intersection of Audubon and Green streets the same morning.  The suspect description matched the description given by the victim in the attempted rape.

"The individual – later identified as Dumas – was located and detained at the intersection of Fountainbleau and Audubon streets. Prior to being detained, Dumas reportedly fled from officers on foot and struck an officer in the face with a closed fist."

Officers secured warrants.

"Dumas was arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for attempted first degree rape, aggravated assault, battery of a police officer and resisting arrest."
