The number of deaths from coronavirus, on top of normal death rates in Louisiana, is putting a strain on coroner's offices, funeral homes, and hospitals. Jefferson Parish coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich says the situation is grim.
"Body storage capacity at funeral homes and hospitals and coroner's offices are overwhelmed," said Dr. Cvitanovich. "In Jefferson parish we've had to procure a refrigerated storage unit to assist us with holding bodies."
The governor has ordered funerals held within three days, to try and speed the process along, but Cvitanovich says that and social distancing limits are making it hard for families.
"They're limiting the number of people attending, whether it's an indoor service or a grave site service, to ten people," Cvitanovich said.
