Could Hurricane Dorian impact Louisiana? Probably not, but 'Too early to say'

As Hurricane Dorian churns in the Gulf now, is there any chance it could eventually end up impacting Louisiana?

"Honestly it is too early to say." WWL TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum said. "I am not giving the all clear for us yet."

He says while the current model information points to Dorian staying over Florida, there is just too much time and too much uncertainty to know for sure.

The National Hurricane Center forecast currently calls for a landfall somewhere on the Florida Peninsula Monday, with the impacts starting over the weekend.

"The risk of dangerous storm surge and hurricane-force winds later this week and this weekend continues to increase in the central and northwestern Bahamas and along the Florida east coast, although it is too soon to determine where these hazards will occur," the NHC posted.

Dorian is expected to have sustained winds approaching 120 miles per hour before it gets to Florida.

The Hurricane Center says, "Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts.  Strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Dorian is expected to become a major hurricane on Friday."

Nussbaum explained that after Dorian hits the Florida East Coast, the models are not in a agreement on what happens.

"Dorian is certainly something for us to watch, but at the moment we are not expecting impacts from it - we will know more about its path this weekend," he said. "The models are not in total agreement. There is a large spread."
