Crawfish season still a little behind this year with prices not as low as in years past

Now that we are almost 2 weeks past Easter and Mother's Day approaching, we are in what is known as the peak of the crawfish season.  What's the latest on the mudbugs?

The end of April through much of May is usually ideal for crawfish.  LSU Ag. Crawfish expert Dr. Greg Lutz says things are a little behind when it comes to the crawfish season.

It's kind of traditional point in the season when the price does come down but that's not really set in stone," Lutz said.  It's not so much demand as it is supply.

Lutz said it is possibly because of the cool winter nights we had, but now we are in a race to the finish as the summer heat approaches.

"We may not see that price drop as much as we have some years," said Lutz.  "Now we are looking at a situation where we hope those crawfish get as big as they can as fast as they can before they decide to go down in the ground."

Still you should have no real problem getting your hands on those beloved mudbugs.  Prices have come down.  Live crawfish are around $2 to about $2.30 a pound.  Boiled are $3.25 to about $3.50 a pound.
