Significant heavy rain may be associated with Cristobal, and Mike Steele in the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says anyone venturing out should avoid roads covered by water.
"It's shocking how many people we unfortunately lose, or people that get hurt, from driving on these flooded roadways from one end of the state to the other," said Steele.
Steele says people shouldn't get complacent, and pay attention to any watches and warnings.
"Being aware, and paying attention, staying tuned in and the national weather service, those steps are critically important at this point."
Steels says they are otherwise gearing up and keeping their fingers crossed that this is a middling tropical storm.
"We are hoping we don't see a lot of massive damage," said Steele, "but if that damage does start to be a problem, then we're going to have those assessment teams, us and FEMA, going out as quickly as possible."
