UPDATE: The National Hurricane Center Wednesday afternoon upgraded the storm to Hurricane Dorian.

Tropical Storm Dorian is churning through the Caribbean.

"On the forecast track, the center of Dorian will pass over or near the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico later today," The National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.

After that, Dorian is expected to move toward Florida.

"The storm is forecast to strengthen late this week and this weekend."

WWL TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum says Dorian could be a category two hurricane by the time it gets near Florida.

"The latest computer models for Dorian show a path along and north of the Bahamas late this week and then make a landfall near Florida's central east coast this weekend as a hurricane."

He does not expect it to threaten Louisiana.

"Models bring it into the far northeast Gulf over the Florida Panhandle next week, but it may be a much weakened system by then. The models show it staying away from Louisiana as it gets drawn to the north/northeast by a trough of low pressure."
