"Due to the potential impact of Invest-92 and rising river levels, all ferry service will be suspended, until further notice." RTA made the announcement late Tuesday night signaling the start of preparations for heavy rain and rising river waters.
As New Orleans begins to batten down, "the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority will begin closing all river gates [Wednesday] morning." RTA says the gate closure will affect the RTA’s Riverfront Streetcar Service as rail access will not be possible due to the river gate closures. "The line will be temporarily suspended and will resume once the Flood Protection Authority re-opens the floodgates."
The authority says the safety of its riders, employees, and property is paramount. Crews will be working to secure the Algiers and Chalmette ferryboats at their berths and raise ferry landings.
The U.S. National Weather Service says Invest 92 could produce heavy rainfall from the Upper Texas Coast to the Florida Panhandle, during the next several days. In addition, this system could produce wind and storm surge impacts later this week or over the weekend from Louisiana to the Upper Texas coast.
