Kenner's Fire Chief says it looks like the historic building housing Gendusa's Italian Market in Rivertown will have to be demolished after fire tore through the building this morning shortly after 5:30am.

"It's extensive damage, the building will probably end up having to be torn down... most of the roof structure is gone," Chief Terence Morris said. "It is pretty much a loss at this point."

He says the owner was inside getting ready for the day when he noticed the fire and called for help.

"We were on the scene in under a minute... we had flames coming through the roof."

The fire house is less than a block away.

The building was constructed in 1903.

Morris says it is a big blow to the business and locals who loved the restaurant.

"I was planning on coming here for lunch today... it is a staple within the Rivertown community."

The blaze started in the kitchen.  The cause is under investigation.
