Flooding in Grand Isle, coastal areas elsewhere

We have seen some wind driven water covering roadways close to the coast from Tropical Storm Cristobal.

On Grand Isle, it's been worse than Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle expected.

"Well, the water is pouring in from the back side of the island, it is gushing in" he explained. "We have some serious, serous erosion problems where the Corps continues putting rock on the Gulf side."

He said this is the type of impact he would expect to see from a stronger system.  Camardelle feels it shows the changing vulnerability of Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island.

"It looks like matter are getting worse, water is coming in from different angles."

He did order a mandatory evacuation, but while most of the visitors left, he says locals remained.

"Most of the residents stayed. A lot of the camp owners and tourists we had this weekend, we go them out."

Water has covered the only road on and off the Island.

Meanwhile in St. Bernard Parish, President Guy McInnis was surprised to see water over roads outside of the levee protection this morning.

"Down in Shell Beach, I see that water coming up pretty fast," he told WWL First News. "I'm a little surprised actually... water is already coming over the road in Florissant, Shell Beach, Yscloskey and Hopedale."

He posted some videos:

Cristobal is expected to keep driving water over coastal areas and brining heavy rain Sunday and Monday.

In Mississippi there has been surge too.
