Ray Nagin, the former mayor of New Orleans, is being released from federal prison because of the COVID-19 crisis.

As WWL-TV reports, because the 63-year old Nagin is considered a high risk of contracting the coronavirus, he will be released from Texarkana federal prison where he is currently serving on 20 counts of corruption and bribery charges.

Nagin’s release comes as a result of policy changes U.S. Attorney General William Barr issued to the Bureau of Prisons last month.  He will be released just three years before his 10-year sentence ends on March 16, 2023. Nagin served as mayor of New Orleans from 2002 to 2010.
