Unless you want to get a camera issued speeding ticket... you better make sure you are not exceeding the posted school zone speed limit, even by just a little bit.
The city has quietly adjusted the criteria for cameras catching speeders.
Back on February 7th, Mayor LaToya Cantrell's office issued a news release about school bus safety.
Tucked into that eight paragraph release was a vague line about the camera system that issues speeding tickets.
The release quoted Cantrell as saying,"Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, and my administration is committed to improving their wellbeing -- from creating a 'Safe Routes to Schools' Director in our Health Department, to adjusting traffic camera deployment in our school zones. We are committed across the board to keeping kids safe."
Apparently that was about the same time the city dropped the threshold for issuing tickets.
Back in 2016, the Landrieu administration said, "Traffic safety camera citations are issued when violators exceed the posted speed limit by six miles per hour inside of a school zone."
Now that is down to just two miles per hour.
The New Orleans Advocate asked the Cantrell administration about the change.
The response from Spokesman Trey Caruso said, "Going two miles over, or 10 miles over the limit: you're in violation either way. We want people to pay attention and be safe around our schools."
