Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards today didn't mince words when asked about an effort by some Republican members of the Louisiana House to nullify the governor's emergency declaration, effectively ending the stay-home order and many other measures taken to counteract the COVID-19 pandemic.
Supporters of a legislative petition that would overturn the Governor’s stay at home order say they have over half of the signatures needed for passage.
"The people of Louisiana are tired," said Rep. Danny McCormick (R-Oil City). "The small businesses are going bankrupt, people are losing their jobs."
Not every GOP state lawmaker is on board, however.
"The governor is probably doing the right thing, and I don't want to put in jeopardy any of the funds that might be coming our way from the feds," said Rep. Barbara Freiburg (R-Baton Rouge. "In addition, there's some discussion about aspects of the way we deliver education might be compromised if we rescind the stay-at-home order."
