Gov. Edwards pleads with Louisianans not to let hospitals fill up

COVID-19 hospitalizations stand at 1,585, which is about where they were in the first couple days of May. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says this is troubling, hospitals have to do more than just treat COVID-19 patients.

"Even if for some strange reason, that is totally incomprehensible to me, you don't care about COVID-19, you should care about there being capacity at that hospital when you have your automobile accident." the governor said, "or when you have your heart attack or your stroke, or your mother or grandmother has that stroke."

And he is again urging people to use some common sense about preventing the spread -- like wearing masks when out, social distancing, or just staying home.

"We're talking about the same staff and the same beds all over the state of Louisiana, so for all of those reasons, we just need people to focus on the task at hand, do their part, be good neighbors," Edwards said.

The governor says people need to be proactive, because even though wearing masks is mandatory, waiting for the state to enforce everyone into compliance isn't practical.

Said Edwards, "if the people of Louisiana are going to sit back and say, 'well we're going to make you enforce every bit of this because we are not going to voluntarily comply,' then we are doomed."
