Governor signs coronavirus orders to close schools, ban gatherings, postpone election

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards Friday signed a proclamation and an executive order with big consequences in the fight against coronavirus.

Among other things, the action immediately bans any gatherings of more than 250 people.  That is until Monday, April 13th.


The proclamation, which seeks to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the state, also closes all K-12 public schools statewide effective Monday, March 16th resuming Monday, April 13th.

“We are going to take bold action to minimize the further spread of this illness," the governor noted.

In a separate executive order, Edwards granted Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin’s request to move the upcoming elections from April and May to June and July.

Edwards added, "This is a serious situation that demands serious action."
