Handheld cell phone ban fails again

It's one of those bills that Louisiana lawmakers consider year after year, and it fails to pass year after year.  The proposal to outlaw holding a cell phone while driving has died again in the legislature.

Representative Mike Huval authored the bill, and he says it really looked like this was the year.


"So you feel good about well, ‘This bill is finally getting momentum,’ then unfortunately it fails," he bemoaned.

Huval says he will try again next year, after Georgia proved bans on drivers holding phones keeps people alive.

"It has saved at least one life per week so far," the Breaux Bridge Rep. explained. "That’s a lot of lives to be saved."

Concerns over too much government control and allegations that is was just a "money grab" were the among the complaints from opponents.
