This week, demolition contractors are working to prepare the Hard Rock site for the next phase of demolishing what would have been the city's newest hotel.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says this week, crews are preparing the area around and under Canal Street.
"Previously there has been demolition of adjacent buildings as part of the scope of work," said Cantrell. "Right now, we have the contractors, through the owners that are prepping for the next phase which is the demolition of the site itself."
She said workers are paying particular attention to what's under the streets.
"Our utilities, our gas lines, you know, we power the entire French Quarter along those areas," she said.
Mayor Cantrell says the city has ongoing contact with the owners about the progress, leading up to the retrieval of the bodies of two workers killed in lat year's collapse that are still caught inside the wreckage.
