And, the annual Satchmo SummerFest kicks off this morning at 11 a.m., with the Roots of Music.
"This is our 19th year," says Spokeswoman Rebecca Sell. "We were started to celebrate Louis Armstong's 100th birthday. It was supposed to be a one-time event and everybody loved it. So we've continued to come back and it's turned into a summer tradition."
"We have over 30 artist performing this weekend. And we try to mix it up. So we mix in some traditional jazz and some brass bands."
Actually the acts range from traditional jazz to swing, brass and marching bands, funk, R&B, and jazz fusion.
"A dozen of the acts are debuts, including Cyril Neville," says Sell. "But we've also got returning favorites like Ellis Marsalis, Ashland Parker, and Robin Barnes, a very talented vocalist."
Other returning favorites are Charmaine Neville, Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers, The Preservation Brass and the Treme Brass Band.
There'll be red beans and rice, of course. "We've also got Cafe Dauphine coming back with her fried bell peppers and a lot of fresh treats, too, like fish tacos and remoulade." A dozen food vendors will be on the grounds of the Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint through Sunday.
And there'll be Satchmo fans from around the world.
"We have a lot of fans from Asia. And we're also attracting large audiences from Europe."
