Long-time Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts is resigning from the council at the end of business today. It comes amid a federal investigation.
Sources indicated the feds gave Roberts until today to quit as part of a plea bargain, but his attorney would only confirm the resignation. He would not comment on the plea bargain reports, only saying his client has not been charged.
Roberts had been a member of the council since 2004, when he represented District 1. For the last seven years, he has served as an at-large member.
He began his political career on the Jefferson Parish School Board at the age of 21.
Roberts has yet to give any reason for the sudden resignation, and appears to have deleted his Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Several media outlets report he is under investigation for alleged tax evasion.
