In one week, 2,545 more people filed unemployment benefits in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission said today that 21,879 unemployment claims were filed for the week ending June 6. That is up from 19,334 claims filed the previous week.

For comparison, a total of 2,818 claims were filed for all of last year.

Unemployment in Louisiana has sky rocketed due to the coronavirus pandemic and the economic shutdown that followed.

People filing for unemployment will receive on average $800 a week in unemployment benefits thanks to the CARES act.
