A bill that would forbid drivers in Louisiana from talking on their cell phones while holding them is set to come up for debate today on the Louisiana House Floor.
Lawmakers for years have gone back and forth over specifically outlawing this form of distracted driving, but it's something Louisiana State Police says is the biggest thing keeping drivers' eyes off the road.
"It's a huge problem," said Trooper Monroe Dillon with Louisiana State Police Troop B based in Kenner. "We're seeing it increasing day by day by the number of crashes that we're having: injury crashes, serious injury crashes, as well as fatal crashes."
Trooper Dillon says they know there are plenty of other driver distractions but most often, it's the phone that a lot of drivers just can't seem to put down.
"You know, you have to take your attention off of one thing to concentrate on another thing, and while you're doing that, you're not able to see those hazards that's in that roadway ahead of you and around you."
