Levee cop shoots at woman after chase from French Quarter to Metairie

An East Jefferson Levee District police officer fired a gun during a police chase that ended in Metairie this morning.

There are no reports of any injuries at this time.

The incident began with a report of someone stealing a New Orleans Fish House truck in the French Quarter, leading to a police pursuit and ended with a crash at West Esplanade and Causeway.

That's where witnesses tell WWL First News they heard multiple shots fired.

Cops on the scene indicated that it was a Levee District officer who fired those bullets.

One woman was taken into custody for allegedly stealing the truck, ramming a police car and a series of other charges.

"One of the East Jefferson Levee District Officers pulled into a parking lot here in order to get ahead of the pursuit," Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto explained. "As they were coming up (he) tried to block the roadway."

The sheriff says the woman did not stop.

"The fish truck actually ran into the officer's vehicle itself.  He exited his vehicle trying to stop it. The vehicle continued to pull forward."

Lopinto says that's when the Levee District Officers pulled the trigger.

"He fired two shots into the vehicle."

The bullets did not injure anyone.

"The person was not hit," the sheriff said.

Lopinto says JPSO will lead the investigation.
