The No. 10 LSU baseball has opened conference play, sweeping a doubleheader against Kentucky Saturday in Alex Box Stadium.
Game 1 was about pitching, Game 2 about hitting.
The Tigers scratched their way to a 2-1 victory in the first game with a walk-off win in the 12th inning.
Zack Hess looked terrific in the first game, limiting Kentucky to one run on four hits, walked six and struck out six in seven innings. The Tigers turned the ball over to Devin Fontenot who dominated in his five-shutout innings. The sophomore tied his career-high with five strikeouts and limited the Wildcats to two hits.
The Tigers only used four pitchers in the 21 innings of the double-header.
LSU's offense exploded for a 16-3 win in Game 2 to get the series victory.
The second game's offensive explosion, helped by three Kentucky errors, complemented the performance of starter Cole Henry, who exited last week after four scoreless innings with tightness in his upper back behind his throwing shoulder.
Henry earned his first career win for the Tigers Saturday. The freshman fired five innings and allowed three runs on six hits, walked four and struck out a career-high six batters.
LSU busted the game open early, scoring six runs - one unearned - in the second inning. By the end of the fourth inning, LSU led 14-3.
Zach Watson went 4-for-4 in game 2 and was a triple shy of the cycle with five RBI to lead the Tiger offense.
With the wins, LSU improves to 14-5 on the season and 2-0 in SEC play. Kentucky drops to 13-6 overall and 0-2 in conference.
The series finale between LSU and Kentucky is slated for 2 o'clock Sunday in The Box. The game will be heard on WWL-AM/FM, with pre-game coverage starting at 1:30 p.m. Right-hander Eric Walker will start on the game for the Tigers, while Kentucky's starter had yet to be announced.
