The latest data released from LSU's Louisiana Survey shows majority support for both legalized sports betting as well as the legalization of recreational marijuana use. LSU Public Policy Research Lab Director Dr. Mike Henderson said sports betting received support from 59% of residents while recreational marijuana received the approval of 55% of residents.
“You look at these questions and sort of take them as a whole, you alsmost get a feel that there is this Libertarian lean in Louisiana, at least on these particular social issues,” said Henderson.
Henderson said there is a big generational gap on recreational pot support. A majority of support comes from younger residents. 80% of those ages 18-29 support the idea of legalization, but those 65 and older showed a 69% opposition.
“This is a generational change over time. Younger folks seem to be more accomodating to this idea, older folks still seem to be pretty resistant to the idea,” said Henderson.
Legislation to legalize sports betting in Louisiana is up for discussion in the session. Governor Edwards has voiced his support for the activity. Henderson said in addition to the latest data, there is a history of public opinion in the state that would indicate support.
“Just because you have public opinion leaning strongly in one direction or the other, that doesn’t necessarily drive how legislators behave. But this one could be a little bit different because they could say, ‘Hey look, there is a lot of public support for this,'” said Henderson.
