While many in Louisiana were celebrating the Mardi Gras weekend, the number one ranked LSU Tigers got swept in Austin as the 18th ranked Texas Longhorns completed the sweep with a come from behind 7-6 win on a cold and dreary day.
It looked like LSU (8-3) would at least salvage one game during the weekend series. The Tigers came back from a 3-1 deficit to take a 6-3 lead in the 7th inning. But LSU closer Todd Peterson couldn’t hold on to a two-run lead in the 9th inning.
The bottom of the 9th inning for LSU got off to an ominous start when Peterson hit the lead-off hitter. Peterson then gave up a single. A sacrifice bunt, put runners at 2nd and 3rd base. An RBI single made it a 6-5 lead.
With runners at first and third base, it looked like LSU had a chance to get out of the jam. Texas hitter Eric Kennedy hit a ball back to Peterson and he threw to second base in the hopes of turning a game-ending double play. But LSU shortstop Josh Smith failed to step on second base and everyone was safe, with the tying run scoring.
The next Texas hitter, Austin Todd, singled up the middle driving in the winning run.
At least the Tigers scored some runs after scoring just five in the first two games of the series. LSU took advantage of three errors to score six runs. Zach Watson had a good day as he drove in three runs and had two hits.
On the mound, Eric Walker started and gave up three runs in four innings. Cole Henry was impressive out of the bullpen,. He tossed 3.1 innings, gave up one run and struck out four. Peterson allowed three runs in one inning of work.
LSU returns to the diamond for a game on Wednesday against Holy Cross.
