Grand Isle Police say another person has drowned off the island, WWL-TV reports.

The report says Christopher Bourgeois jumped into the water around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when his six-year-old godson began struggling.

Police chief Laine Landry says Bourgeois was able to hand the child off to someone else, getting him to safety, but the Bourgeois disappeared beneath the surface.

His body was discovered 45 minutes later, 500 to 600 yards east of where he disappeared.

Landry said it is the sixth drowning death this season.
