A public memorial visitation will be held today for for Art Neville, founding member of The Neville Brothers and The Meters.

The event takes place from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave.

At the family's request, there will be no speakers. Funeral home officials say mourners can sit and pay their respects.

Neville, the eldest of the four Neville brothers, died July 22 at the age of 81. In 1965, he founded The Meters, playing keyboard with bassist George Porter Jr. and guitar player Leo Nocentelli.

In addition to releasing recordings of their own brand of funk, The Meters served as session musicians or the likes of Dr. John and Allen Toussaint, including playing for Patti LaBelle's recording of the Toussaint-penned "Lady Marmalade."

In 1977, he joined his brothers Aaron, Charles, and Cyril in forming The Neville Brothers, and collectively they became know as "The First Family of Funk." As a member of The Neville Brothers, Art Neville won a Grammy award for 1989's Yellow Moon

In 2018, The Meters were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The Meters have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame four times, most recently in 2017.
