Details are coming to light about the demise of the Mystic Krewe of Nyx's plans to hold a smaller, summer-time parade downtown, The New Orleans Advocate reports.

The report says Nyx founder and captain Julie Lea announced the event before securing the necessary permits from the city, and without informing all of the krewe's 3,380 members.

Mardi Gras Guide publisher Arthur Hardy told The Advocate he was surprised the krewe would announce its intentions to roll in July without first making sure the city was okay with it.

"While I have the utmost respect for what Nyx has achieved as an all-women’s Carnival krewe, and I applaud them for their commitment to our children and our community —unfortunately I cannot support the addition of a summer parade," said New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Their proposed second parade places demands on our public safety resources in the middle of hurricane season, and it is not something our NOPD leadership is comfortable with. Their request has been denied, and the event will not proceed."

The Avocate also report emails it has obtained indicate not all of Nyx's 3,380 krewe members were made awar of the plans. Lea had announced that 800 of its riders would be on a smalle, 20-float parade.

Despite the mayor's statement about NOPD resources being diverted to parade route duties during hurricane season, there are other parades that happen during the hurricane season. Krewe of Boo presents a parade featuring Halloween-themed marching units, bands, and floats with riders throwing beads. Krewe of Boo's web site, which boasts of 100,000 spectators, says they will parade Saturday October 19, at 6:30 p.m.

Hurricane season began June 1 and lasts through November 30.
