The New Orleans Council hosted friends and colleagues of legendary musician Dr. John at a presentation of his lifetime achievements and boundless contributions to the city Thursday.
Dr. John was a cultural icon and instrumental figure in shaping New Orleans' rich history. As both a student and trailblazer of the unique 'New Orleans sound,' his reverence for the city's culture helped expand and elevate its influence across the globe.
"Dr. John's good works extended beyond his music," said Councilmember-At-Large Helena Moreno. "When tragedy struck, whether it was the floods after Katrina or the BP oil spill, Dr. John stepped in to help our city bounce back. He was truly a man of the people, often seen walking the streets unassuming, unpretentious, and shoulder to shoulder with his fellow New Orleanians always fighting for what was right."
The Council heard touching personal stories about the late musician from his bandleader, Roland Guerin, and WWOZ General Manager Beth Arroyo Utterback. Following the presentation, the Council adopted a corresponding resolution honoring the life and legacy of Dr. John in the City of New Orleans.
A public visitation for Dr. John will be held on Saturday, June 22, from 7 to 10:30 a.m. at the Orpheum Theater. His private memorial to follow will be broadcast live on WWOZ from 1 to 3 p.m.
