New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson joined us on WWL Radio today to address the outcry for more action to address juvenile crime.
Part of his plan includes picking up more kids who violate curfew and identifying the habitual offenders.
Instead of taking the children home, as they typically do, he says they will be transported to the Curfew Center.
"We want to bring them to this Curfew Center, where their parents will have to come and get them," Ferguson explained.
When the parents show up, he says they can intervene in trying to fix what is wrong in that child's home.
"So, it's unfortunate and sad to say, but to teach and adults how to be a parent and be responsible for their child."
Ferguson is calling for more electronic monitoring for juvenile criminals who are allowed to return home.
He says authorities are also organizing a meeting with police, judges, prosecutors and other stake holders to identify what else they can do to address juvenile crime.
This all comes after a 17-year-old with a criminal record allegedly killed a woman and wounded her husband after breaking into their car in Mid-City.
