"At about 1:13 a.m., the pictured subjects were observed toppling the statue of John McDonogh in Lafayette Square in the 500 block of Saint Charles Avenue," police said in their statement.
The images show three people approaching the statue across the street from Gallier Hall.
John McDonogh was a shipping and real estate baron who left millions of dollars when he died to the cities of Baltimore and New Orleans to build public schools. He was also a slave owner, making his name and likeness a frequent target.
