The New Orleans Police Department is set to significantly boost its crime-solving power in the new year.

Superintendent Shaun Ferguson says the department is prepared to begin construction of its own crime lab, complete with DNA analysis, to speed up the processing of forensic evidence gathered during investigations.

"So we have that lab coming up, beginning of the year," Ferguson told WWL's Newell Normand. "We had to push it back, due to some issues, but we do have that lab, to break ground."

Ferguson says it is matter of quality over quantity when it comes gathering intricate and costly evidence like DNA.

Currently, DNA evidence that NOPD detectives gather must be sent to the Louisiana State Police crime lab for analysis -- meaning it waits in line with evidence coming from department all over Louisiana. Ferguson says the NOPD having its own lab will enable the department to speed up the processing of evidence and provide the District Attorney with more solid evidence.
