NOPD vows strict enforcement of shut down orders and immediate action against violators

Cops in New Orleans are making it clear they will not tolerate people gathering in the city or businesses which violate new orders to close.

"The New Orleans Police Department will be strictly enforcing the recent shutdown orders given by our mayor as well as by our governor," Police Chief Shawn Ferguson vowed.

The chief said this will include:

  • Bars
  • Night Clubs
  • Casinos
  • Restaurants
  • Gyms
  • Health Clubs

He says restaurants can still operate, as long as no one dines at the business.

"We will allow take out services, delivery services as well as drive through services."

The new order also includes banning what the mayor called, "All public and private gatherings."  She explained that the only reason people should be in any size groups is if they are families living in a single household.

Ferguson says officers will patrol the city looking for violations.

"Enforcement by the New Orleans Police department will be acting as the eyes and ears on the street for our permit division to identify those who are noncompliant."

The chief says if they find people or businesses violating the order, the will react.

"The New Orleans Police Department is ready and prepared to take immediate action."

He warned businesses that there could be long-term ramifications.

"If you want to keep your license to operate, we urge you to comply."

Ferguson insisted everyone must do their part to help.

"This is incredibly serious that we fight together to slow down this virus."
