An office duty police officer reportedly shot a 14-year-old boy in the head outside of the officer’s Metairie area home.

The early Friday morning shooting took place just after 3am.

The officer was awakened by noises outside his home.

The officer reportedly armed himself and went outside to investigate.

That’s when the officer encountered several juveniles in the front yard of his home on Grammar Avenue.

WWL-TV reports a confrontation ensued, ending in the man opening fire and hitting the 14-year-old in the head.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto says an investigation is still underway.

Lopinto says his investigators have spoken to some of the juveniles who were present at the incident, but not all of them.

"I want to give my detectives the ability to have those conversations before we release any additional information," Lopinto told WWL-TV.

The officer is cooperating with authorities and turned his weapon over to JPSO.
