The National Hurricane Center has expanded the area along the Gulf Coast that could see tropical rains by this coming weekend.
"Heavy rainfall is possible along portions of the northern and eastern U.S. Gulf coast later this week," Senior Hurricane Specialist John Cangialosi said.
The broadening potential impact zone above shows the large uncertainty surrounding the forecast for the low pressure system expected to move into the Gulf on Wednesday.
The below video from the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center shows the current thinking is that the bulk of the rain stays to the east of Louisiana:
Here is what we do know from the Hurricane Center about the system known as Invest 92L:
- A trough of low pressure located over south-central Georgia is expected to move toward the Gulf during the next day or two
- Low pressure is forecast to form over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday
- Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for development and a tropical depression is likely to form by the end of the week
- Regardless if a tropical cyclone develops, this system has the potential to produce heavy rainfall along portions of the Gulf Coast
- Interests along the Gulf Coast from the Upper Texas coast to the western Florida peninsula should monitor the progress of this system
As of Monday night, federal forecasters had an 80 percent chance of tropical formation through five days.
