It's all about the clothes and having a good time this weekend in New Orleans. Folks have been running and strolling in style today in the Vieux Carre.
The Hash House Harriers presented their 25th annual Red Dress Run to kick off the festivities Saturday morning, with just one rule...
"100 percent, the only requirement is you have to wear a red dress."
Spokesman Bill Healy says the 'run' presented some challenges for the participants. "You have to have calves like Tina Turner if you're going to run in high heels. And the wigs make it a little warm, too."
He admits it really really wasn't a very serious athletic event. "Our club motto is 'We're a drinking club with a running problem'."
Thousands of guys and gals donned their dresses for the sudsy scurry to Crescent Park for the after party. And many more just watched from curbside."Every year we have about four times the folks not registered that are just cheering us on in the Quarter," Healy says.
The Harriers have raised about two million dollars for local non-profits.
"The concept is that you wear the same linen to Dirty Linen that you wore to White linen, so that's why it's dirty," says Tramonte.
And, he says it's also the most economical summer party in the city.
"It's twenty dollars for a wristband. And you get all access to 36 different parties up and down Royal Street. We've got restaurant pairings with restaurants all over the city, so you get access to that. We've got street musicians, and it's just a great evening of strolling, drinking and eating on Royal Street."
Olde Towne Slidell also gets in on the clothing celebrations, with its 3rd annual White Linen and Lagniappe Saturday.
The free event takes place from 5 to 9 p.m., and includes art, live entertainment, fine and casual dining, cool beverages, unique shopping and lots of lagniappe.
Many of Olde Towne’s offices, restaurants, galleries, shops and stores will be open during the event to showcase their businesses. Over 100 artists and vendors will also have their works on display both in stores and on the street and there will be live entertainment throughout Olde Towne.
