A few lines added to a senate bill, approved on a 39-nothing vote, could bring a substantial shift in the power of the Port of New Orleans and the future redevelopment of the Avondale Shipyard.
Shipyard owner Avondale Marine, the Port of New Orleans and the New Orleans Public Belt Railway have a non-binding agreement in place supporting the redevelopment of the shipyard with plans to connect it with a newly constructed connection to the Public Belt which serves the Class I railroads in New Orleans.
The former shipyard sits on more than 200 acres of land fronting the Mississippi River with more than 8000-feet of available docking for ships.
