A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by the grandmother of a Louisiana teenager severely mistreated at a school in West Baton Rouge Parish.
Video showed a former police officer hurling the 14-year-old student to the ground at Brusly Middle School and another former officer slamming the teen against a table.
Both former officers are facing charges in connection with the incident, one with malfeasance in office and the other with simple battery. They resigned from the Brusly Police Department a month after surveillance footage of the violent encounter was leaked to local media.
Doris Snearl filed her lawsuit against police and the school district. The Advocate says she disclosed the settlement on Friday, but declined to provide details.
It remains unclear why the officers acted with such force against the teen. WAFB reported that the boy admitted reaching for an officer's gun during the scuffle. In the video, a staffer can be seen picking up the gun from the floor and placing it on the table. An attorney for the teen's family, told the Advocate that the boy had gotten into an argument with a school official that day over how long he should be in detention for cursing.
