Severe weather possible Easter afternoon and evening

severe weather

Severe storms are in the forecast this afternoon and evening.

"Stay aware of the weather on this Easter Sunday, as we're expecting strong to severe storms across much of the Gulf South. It will also be windy for much of the day with gusts over 40 mph," WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone advised.

He says the most likely area will be north of the lake.

"The extreme northern Florida Parishes are under a 'moderate' risk of severe weather (level 4 of 5) and the rest of the Northshore is under an 'enhanced' risk (level 3 of 5)."

Here is a tentative time line for what to expect on Sunday:

  • 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.: We could get some individual strong to severe storms forming - these cells could bring damaging winds, hail and possibly a tornado.
  • 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.: A line of thunderstorms will cross our area after sunset. This line of storms could cause some high wind gusts and perhaps an isolated tornado.
  • 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.: Rain ends.

Malone says that rain totals look like only about a half-inch, but some areas could get an inch.

"Even though this is not a particularly heavy rain event, the ingredients will be there for powerful storms, so please stay alert. Rain ends by about 11 p.m., and cooler air filters in on Monday. Another shot of cool air arrives Tuesday to set up some pleasant and mild weather for the rest of the week."
