The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says a 14-year-old fatally stabbed his father with a spear this morning at a home in the 2100 block of Browning Lane in Terrytown.
According to the sheriff's office, the suspect called police shortly after it happened.
"We arrived here on the scene, we have the 14-year-old in custody back in the detective bureau where he has admitted to stabbing his father with the spear," said Sheriff Joe Lopinto.
The victim, a 50-year-old man, was found dead with multiple stab wounds.
"We do believe, preliminarily, there is probably some mental illness involved with this," the sheriff said.
Authorities describe the weapon as a "tactical spear," commonly available in sporting goods stores. They retail for around $40 to $100.
